A Brief History
Learn about Bread and Puppet's history as one of the oldest theater companies in the United States.
Bread and Puppet was founded in New York City in 1963 by Peter Schumann, and his wife Elka Schumann. The group’s style of puppetry and performance differed from other groups at the time, that typically aimed for a more “polished” approach to puppetry to attempt to elevate the artform. Bread and Puppet, however, was “far from theatrical” as the performances were not focused on the work of the actors. They intertwined puppetry and street performances and aligned themselves with the anti-Vietnam War activism during this time.
As the art culture in New York City became more uniformed, Bread and Puppet sought out a new home. In 1969, they settled at Goddard College in Vermont. This move also caused a shift in the theater company’s activism, as the rural environment of Vermont did not agree with Bread and Puppet’s anti-war activism. They adapted their activism to local contexts and balanced that activism with celebrations of life and nature to foster a rich artistic community. The company continued to grow in Vermont as young performers searched for alternative theater experiences, and by 1974, the company moved to an ex-dairy farm in Glover, VT with plenty of space to build and rehearse new puppet shows and to run a circus.
Eventually, Bread and Puppet shifted their focus to regular performances rather than large standalone events, and this is the format they continue to use today. They have even opened an internship program to educate performers in “Cheap Art” and papier-mâché puppet activism. Many Bread and Puppet alumni have gone on to include activism within their art.
